B5 104 - Born to the Purple

Londo si innamora di una affascinante schiava, che però ha un incarico da portare a termine: rubare dei file dal computer dell'ambasciatore. Nel frattempo, Garibaldi investiga sull'uso non autorizzato di canali di comunicazione ad accesso riservato.

• La società centauri pare reggersi su un delicato equilibrio di ricatti e tradimenti, con ognuna delle principali famiglie (o casati) che detiene informazioni sui "panni sporchi" delle altre.
• Sinclair sa che per avere informazioni su quello che accade o è accaduto su Babylon 5, i file di Garibaldi sono un'ottima risorsa.
• Babylon 5 ha un sistema di comunicazione (Canali Oro) riservato solo a comunicazioni di emergenza il cui uso è subordinato al permesso dell'ufficiale comandante. Solo gli alti ufficiali e gli ambasciatori sono a conoscenza dell'esistenza di questi canali prioritari.
• Una intensa litigata di una coppia vicina è sufficiente per sconvolgere Talia a tal punto da farla allontanare a prendere una boccata d'aria.
• Talia Winters acconsente ad andare contro le regole del Corpo Psi visto che c'è una vita in gioco.
• All'inizio della puntata, Londo e G'Kar paiono molto più rilassati di come si erano lasciati in Midnight on the Firing Line.
• La madre di Ivanova si è suicidata (Midnight on the Firing Line), il fratello è morto durante il conflitto tra Terrestri e Minbari ed il padre, infine, si è spento in questa puntata. Non c'è da stupirsi del carattere non facile del secondo in comando di Babylon 5.
• Il titolo dell'episodio deriva dai tempi dell'Impero Romano. I senatori romani vestivano toghe con finiture in porpora, altamente costosa, per simboleggiare il proprio stato sociale elevato. Ancora oggi i membri della Camera dei Lord inglese vestono abiti con inserti in porpora. Tale assemblea è formata da membri eletti ("raised to the purple") e membri ereditari ("born to the purple").
• Ivanova va contro le regole della Alleanza Terrestre per soddisfare un suo bisogno personale, pur importante.
• Ad un certo punto dell'episodio, G'Kar e Trakis si incontrano e quest'ultimo dice all'ambasciatore: "Non mi aveva detto niente circa un telepate". Da questa frase si può supporre che sia stato G'Kar ad ingaggiare Trakis.
• Nella società centauri è ancora in essere la schiavitù, regolata da precise norme di legge che prevedono la responsabilità del "padrone" per ogni azione dello "schiavo". Da quanto si apprende da questo episodio, un Centauri può essere ridotto in schiavitù non tanto per l'appartenenza ad una certa casta, quanto per motivi economici e per il fatto di non potere o non volere ricorrere a ricatti e tradimenti per elevarsi socialmente.
• Il carattere decisamente sospettoso di Garibaldi gli dà una bella mano a scoprire il responsabile dell'uso non autorizzato dei Canali Oro.
• Come si può notare in alcune scene, Ivanova indossa un solo orecchino. Il fatto che normalmente indossare orecchini sia vietato dai regolamenti militari può indicare che vestire un tale ornamento abbia un importante significato per il tenente comandante (ed in effetti è proprio così, come si verrà a sapere in seguito).
• Londo afferma di essere un "washed up old Republican", riconfermando di pensare con malinconia ai vecchi tempi in cui i Centauri erano tra le specie maggiormente influenti nella galassia.
• Londo consegna ad Adira un regalo degli "antichi giorni della Repubblica". Un altro rimando dell'ambasciatore centauri ai tempi perduti.
• La frase di Londo a Vir "What do you want, you moon-faced assassin of joy?" riceverà tutt'altro significato in un episodio futuro.
• Anche la frase di Garibaldi "Lousy Dodgers!" ritornerà in una puntata successiva.
• Trakis parla di un "Impero Centauri", mentre nel resto della serie si sentirà sempre parlare della "Repubblica Centauri". In effetti, la prima definizione parrebbe più consona pensando alla forma di governo effettivamente in essere su Centauri Prime.
• Il saluto narn fatto da G'Kar nella parte conclusiva della puntata è lievemente diverso da quelli che si vedranno negli episodi successivi.
• Londo chiede ad Adira di tornare a trovarlo. In effetti, accadrà in un episodio futuro, ma non nel senso che l'ambasciatore si aspetta.
• Talia Winters ha lavorato in passato per il Political Bureau.
• Il miglior ristorante di Babylon 5 è "Fresh Air".
• A quanto pare, G'Kar sembra molto interessato alla ballerina nelle scene iniziali dell'episodio. La fissa per non meno di quattro volte.

• J. Michael Straczynski circa il fatto che Sinclair non venga riconosciuto quando si reca nel locale delle spogliarelliste con Londo: "This is something we discussed. Can Sinclair go places in the station and not be recognized? In some cases, no. In a place like the Dark Star, maybe so; this isn't the kind of place he generally hangs out in. It's a question of how much day-to-day interaction somebody would have with him. Yes, he's an important figure; but I'm not sure if I'd immediately recognize L.A. Mayor Richard Riordan at first glance, particularly in different style of dress, in an unusual location. We're not going to do it a lot, just once this season, but we thought it was a reasonable approach".
• Sempre J. Michael Straczynski, su Ivanova: "It's not really an attempt to pull at heart strings, as it is to establish that this is someone who's had, and is still having, a pretty rough life. It's a real roller-coaster for her, and the way she survives it is to absolutely bottle it up inside. She has had angst throughout her life, and she's in for more. We start to track that in little ways that probably no one will notice, as well as making it the occasional story point. A little way nobody'll notice: after this episode, she starts messing with her hair, which we'd deliberately set as extremely tight until now. Suddenly she doesn't have someone for whom she has to be a certain way, and she has to start finding her own identity, and it ain't easy".
• "There will be both sex and romance on B5 (sometimes together, sometimes not)", ha detto J. Michael Straczynski, "It's perversely appropriate that in the B5 series, it's not the Commander who gets laid first, or Garibaldi, or G'Kar... it's Londo. And it's a very funny, but very touching and moving episode".
