Le convinzioni etiche del Dott. Franklin sono messe alla prova quando due alieni rifiutano per motivi religiosi di far sottoporre il proprio figlio a una semplice operazione che salverebbe la vita al ragazzo. Nel frattempo, Ivanova guida una missione di soccorso di una nave da trasporto.

• I Figli del Tempo sono una specie minore con forti convinzioni religiose, tra le quali quella che un intervento chirurgico che apra la cassa toracica "distrugge" l'anima del paziente.
• La reazione di Sinclair alla richiesta del Dott. Franklin conferma quanto già visto negli episodi precedenti: piuttosto che essere forzato a prendere decisioni che non condivide, il comandante preferisce farsi da parte e trovare una soluzione che gli permetta di non prendere la decisione che ritiene errata (come accaduto in Midnight on the Firing Line con gli ordini del senatore per la votazione).
• I due genitori alieni non permettono che il figlio sia operato perché considerano il fatto come una intromissione nelle proprie convinzioni religiose, ma sono infastiditi quando Delenn rifiuta di aiutarli. Per l'ambasciatrice avrebbe voluto dire andare contro le proprie convinzioni, ma sembra proprio che ai due genitori questo non interessi.
• La Asimov è la stessa nave che ha portato il Dott. Franklin su Babylon 5 (Soul Hunter).
• Franklin è disposto ad infrangere o aggirare le regole per una causa in cui crede. Una caratteristica caratteriale del personaggio che ritroveremo in altri episodi.
• La Shakespeare Corporation e le uova di pfingle sono rimandi ai racconti Under the Eye of God e Covenant of Justice dell'autore della storia di questo episodio, David Gerrold.

• Un episodio con una storia (e soprattutto una conclusione) come quella di questa puntata incontra solitamente delle resistenze quando presentata al network che deve trasmetterla, poiché affronta temi decisamente "delicati" e coinvolge un bambino. Secondo quanto ha affermato J. Michael Straczynski, invece, PTEN, il consorzio di network che ha trasmesso Babylon 5, e Warner Brothers hanno sempre supportato la produzione e non hanno mai imposto modifiche alla trama.
• Secondo J. Michael Straczynski, i genitori alieni non sono stati puniti per l'omicidio del figlio, in quanto, essendo stato un "incidente" che non ha coinvolto altre specie, sono stati giudicati secondo le leggi del loro popolo. E per la cultura dei Figli del Tempo, quello commesso dai due non è un omicidio.
