B5 201 - Points of Departure

La stazione ha un nuovo ufficiale comandante e viene messa in grave pericolo da una nave da guerra minbari, comandata da alcuni rinnegati.

• Jeffrey Sinclair è improvvisamente richiamato sulla Terra e viene sostituito dal Capitano John Sheridan al comando di Babylon 5.
• Sinclair diviene il primo ambasciatore umano su Minbar.
• Sheridan è un eroe di guerra, capace di ottenere l'unica vera vittoria nel corso del conflitto contro i Minbari. Grazie ad uno stratagemma, infatti, Sheridan è riuscito a distruggere la nave ammiraglia minbari, la Black Star, e altre navi di scorta, facendo brillare alcuni degli asteroidi tra Giove e Marte, precedentemente minati con delle bombe a fusione.
• Le navi minbari utilizzano una tecnologia stealth che non permette al sistema di puntamento delle navi terrestri di ottenere un aggancio sul bersaglio, rendendo inutilizzabili le armi. Questo particolare si era già visto in And the Sky Full of Stars.
• I Minbari si sono arresi alla Battaglia della Linea dopo aver scoperto che le anime minbari si reincarnavano negli Umani, grazie agli esami fatti a Sinclair (And the Sky Full of Stars). L'informazione è comunque rimasta segreta, il Consiglio dei Grigi infatti non ha mai motivato l'ordine di arrendersi per evitare che la rivelazione minasse la società minbari dalle fondamenta.
• Alcuni esponenti della casta guerriera minbari non hanno condiviso l'ordine di resa ricevuto dal Consiglio dei Grigi alla Battaglia della Linea. Tra questi, il capitano e l'equipaggio della Trigati.
• Ivanova è già stata in passato sotto il comando di Sheridan, al punto di trasferimento nei pressi di Io.

Domande senza risposta

• Come hanno fatto i Minbari a scoprire che le loro anime si sono reincarnate negli Umani con un semplice esame? Il Triluminare è lo strumento usato per effettuare questo esame?
• Dove ha passato i dodici anni intercorsi tra la fine della guerra e i fatti raccontati in questo episodio la Trigati e il suo equipaggio? Sono stati "coperti" dalla casta guerriera? In che modo?
• Per quale ragione i Minbari, dopo aver scoperto che Sinclair non è l'unico umano nel quale si sono reincarnate anime minbari, continuano a seguire il comandante e a "guidarlo"? È forse l'anima di un Minbari "speciale" quella che si è reincarnata in Sinclair?
• Alla fine dell'episodio, Lennier cita una profezia che coinvolge Minbari ed Umani. Cosa dice questa profezia nel dettaglio?
• In cosa si è trasformata Delenn?

• I Minbari considerano lo stratagemma usato da Sheridan per distruggere la Black Star non onorevole. Di conseguenza, hanno soprannominato il capitano con il nomignolo Starkiller.
• Sheridan è stato nominato nuovo ufficiale comandante dal Presidente Clark. Era il secondo nella lista delle preferenze del precedente Presidente Santiago, morto nell'esplosione dell'Earthforce One otto giorni prima delle vicende narrate in questo episodio.
• I Minbari non sono stati consultati sulla nomina di Sheridan e non sono d'accordo sulla scelta.
• Come Hedronn dice a Kalain, "i Minbari non uccidono altri Minbari".
• È convinzione tra i Minbari che ogni anima si reincarni nella generazione successiva.
• Il discorso di Lennier sulle anime dei Minbari ricalca quello fatto da Delenn al Cacciatore di Anime in Soul Hunter.
• La popolazione minbari è lentamente diminuita nel corso degli ultimi duemila anni.
• Garibaldi è ancora ricoverato al Medlab. Le sue condizioni rimangono critiche.
• Sinclair è il primo essere umano che i Minbari hanno incontrato.

• Sembra che all'interno del Consiglio dei Grigi ci siano diversi conflitti e divisioni. Un membro del consiglio ha infatti consegnato il Triluminare a Delenn (Babylon Squared), anche se Hedronn afferma chiaramente che lo stesso consiglio aveva ordinato a Delenn di aspettare.
• In questo episodio appare per la prima volta Warren Keffer.
• La nave comandata da Sheridan prima del nuovo incarico su Babylon 5 è la EAS Agamemnon. La rivedremo in episodi futuri.
• Nuovo ufficiale comandante, ma le iniziali rimangono le stesse: "J. S.", le stesse di Joe (Michael) Straczynski.
• Ivanova sottolinea come gli alloggi di Sheridan siano più grandi di quelli degli altri ufficiali. Un vantaggio che si rivelerà essere un problema in un episodio futuro.
• All'interno dell'Earheart (il cui nome è un omaggio alla aviatrice Amelia Earheart), per tradizione, è vietato parlare di questioni di lavoro. Chi trasgredisce deve pagare da bere a tutti i presenti.
• Sheridan dice al Dalai Lama che "he does not understand". Una ammissione che il capitano ripeterà solo in un'altra circostanza fino alla fine della serie.
• Il discorso finale di Sheridan è una versione rimaneggiata del messaggio annuale al Congresso del 1862, tenuto dal Presidente Lincoln: "The dogmas of the quiet past, are inadequate to the stormy present. The occasion is piled high with difficulty, and we must rise, with the occasion. As our case is new, so we must think anew, and act anew. We must disenthrall ourselves, and then we shall save our country. Fellow-citizens, we cannot escape history. We of this Congress and this Administration, will be remembered in spite of ourselves. • La battuta di Ivanova "I'm paying off karma at a vastly accelerated rate" è un riferimento ad una frase spesso ripetuta da Kathryn Drennan, moglie di J. Michael Straczynski, che quest'ultimo ha voluto inserire nello script.
• Bruce Boxleitner non aveva mai visto un episodio di Babylon 5, prima di ottenere la parte di Sheridan. Boxleitner ha sconfitto una agguerrita concorrenza per il ruolo del capitano, che comprendeva gli attori James Earl Jones, Michael York, Roger Reece, Anthony Andrews e Robert Foxworth (a cui è stata assegnata la parte del Generale Hague).
• Se Sinclair fosse rimasto più a lungo, il mistero circa la Battaglia della Linea sarebbe stato rivelato più avanti nel corso della serie.
• Nel corso delle prime settimane di lavoro, Bruce Boxleitner è stato preso in giro più volte poiché il suo salario era maggiore di quello degli altri attori protagonisti.
• Inizialmente, sarebbe dovuto essere il Presidente Clark ad annunciare ad Ivanova il cambiamento di ufficiale comandante, ma J. Michael Straczynski ha voluto introdurre il personaggio del Generale Hague, e di conseguenza il dialogo è stato modificato.

Sheridan: A cocoon? As in a moth or a butterfly?
Ivanova: Yes, sir. About yea high.
Sheridan: Interesting place you have here...
Ivanova: Yes, sir.
