B5 203 - The Geometry of Shadows

Ivanova viene promossa e Sheridan le assegna come primo compito la risoluzione dei conflitti tra Drazi in atto sulla stazione. Intanto, Londo stipula nuove alleanze e cerca l'appoggio dei Tecnomaghi, mentre Garibaldi deve decidere se tornare o meno al suo posto di capo della Sicurezza.

• Chi sono i soci di Refa? Chi hanno in progetto di fare eleggere come nuovo imperatore, quando e se ne avranno la possibilità?
• Quale sarà il ruolo di Londo nel complotto ordito da Refa e soci?
• La soluzione di Ivanova al problema con i Drazi avrà ripercussioni future?

Note

• I Tecnomaghi usano la tecnologia per ottenere effetti "magici". Secondo Londo è di pessimo auspicio vederne due o più assieme. I Tecnomaghi non sono una specie a sé, ma sono composti da individui appartenenti a diverse specie.
• Una volta ogni cinque anni (un "ciclo"), la comunità drazi si divide in due fazioni, identificate da due colori, il verde e il viola, che combattono tra di loro per un intero anno (l'anno drazi è pari a circa 1,2 anni terrestri). La fazione che risulta vittoriosa sarà quella dominante per il successivo ciclo.
• Come si evince chiaramente in questo episodio, i capi delle due fazioni verde e viola sono al comando solo dei Drazi presenti su Babylon 5. Ciò fa supporre che i Drazi eleggano un leader per ogni comunità isolata, oltre che per i territori sotto il loro controllo.
• Secondo quanto affermato da Elric, il futuro di Londo sarà nefasto e porterà alla morte di numerose persone per colpa del Centauri.
• La frattura alla gamba di Ivanova non era prevista nella sceneggiatura originale. È stata inserita poiché Claudia Christian si è realmente fratturata un piede nel periodo in cui sono state effettate le riprese dell'episodio. Sempre per lo stesso motivo, è stata modificata la scena della liberazione di Ivanova dai Drazi che la tengono prigioniera. Secondo la prima scrittura della storia, Ivanova si liberava da sola, senza l'intervento di Garibaldi, ma l'infortunio ha impedito all'attrice di interpretare le sequenze di azione che sarebbero state necessarie.
• Nei credit di questo episodio è inserito anche Edward Conery nel ruolo di Devereaux. Non vi è traccia del personaggio nel corso dell'episodio, ma visto che lo stesso è apparso in Revelations, pur non comparendo nei credit, è plausibile l'inserimento in quelli di questo episodio per rimediare alla dimenticanza.
• L'avvertimento di Elric a Vir ("Do not try the patience of wizards for they are subtle and quick to anger") è un omaggio a The Lord of the Rings (Il Signore degli anelli), in cui Gildor dice a Frodo: "Do not meddle in the affairs of wizards, for they are subtle and quick to anger".
• Secondo J. Michael Straczynski, nella scena in cui Garibaldi gioca con la carica del suo PPG, lo stesso sta pensando se suicidarsi o meno.
• Il discorso di Vir sul destino potrebbe essere un omaggio al Giulio Cesare di Shakespeare.
• I titoli iniziali sono stati modificati dall'inizio della stagione: Delenn compare nella sigla col nuovo aspetto, Keffer ottiene la citazione del suo grado, mentre a partire dal prossimo episodio Ivanova verrà indicata come tenente comandante, dopo la promozione di questa puntata.
• L'aspetto dei Drazi è stato modificato rispetto alla prima stagione, anche se si continueranno a vedere alcuni Drazi che mostrano il "vecchio" aspetto.

Zocalo

• Claudia Christian si è rotta il piede in tre punti per un incidente occorsole nel giardino di casa, mentre stava inseguendo un volatile. L'attrice ha saltato, atterrando in maniera scomposta su una pietra.
• Per la parte di Elric aveva sostenuto un'audizione anche l'attore Thuran Bey, che però è stato scartato poichè ritenuto troppo buono. Vedremo comunque l'attore, in due diversi ruoli, nel corso della serie.
• Il personaggio di Elric è stato interpretato da Michael Ansara, un ottimo attore, che però ha difficoltà a ricordare le proprie battute. La produzione si è quindi dovuta adattare con suggeritori, "gobbi" e molta pazienza, visto che le scene in cui appariva Ansara sono state rigirate più volte, proprio per questo problema.

Blooper

• Nella scena in cui Garibaldi si reca a liberare Ivanova, vediamo un Drazi con le spalline rosse alzarsi per andare ad aprire il portello, ma al cambio di inquadratura il Drazi è differente e quello con le spalline rosse sta facendo la guardia ad Ivanova.
