B5 221 - Comes the Inquisitor

G'Kar tenta di tenere sotto controllo i Narn sulla stazione, mentre Delenn deve provare la sua fedeltà ad un inquisitore mandato dai Vorlon.

• Delenn e, in seguito, anche Sheridan vengono messi alla prova da un inquisitore inviato sulla stazione da Kosh. Si tratta di un umano che si fa chiamare Sebastian, ma che in realtà Sheridan scopre essere Jack lo squartatore.
• Alcuni Narn presenti sulla stazione mettono in dubbio la posizione di G'Kar di leader della sua gente. L'ex ambasciatore riesce a farsi ascoltare dagli altri Narn grazie ai Ranger, che gli consegnano in tempo un messaggio dalla famiglia del suo principale oppositore, rimasta su Narn.

Domande senza risposta

• Come mai i Vorlon hanno prelevato proprio Jack lo squartatore dalla Terra del XIX secolo?
• Per quale ragione i Vorlon hanno scelto proprio Sebastian/Jack come inquisitore di Delenn?
• Cosa ha in mente esattamente G'Kar per ottenere la liberazione di Narn?
• Dai dialoghi dell'episodio, si ha la sensazione che Sebastian sia tenuto in animazione sospesa finché i Vorlon non hanno bisogno di lui. C'è qualcun altro che si trova nella stessa situazione di Sebastian?
• Per quale motivo Kosh non ha condotto personalmente l'interrogatorio, scegliendo invece Sebastian?
• Secondo quanto afferma Sebastian, I Vorlon sono stati sulla Terra e su vari altri pianeti più volte. È forse per questo che Delenn in In the Shadow of Z'ha'dum dice a Sheridan che se uscisse dalla tuta relazionale, Kosh verrebbe riconosciuto?
• Come hanno fatto i Ranger a riuscire a consegnare il messaggio a G'Kar in sole 24 ore? Ci sono dei Ranger su Narn?
• In una scena dell'episodio, Vir congeda un uomo d'affari centauri dicendogli che Londo non può fare niente per lui. È forse una conferma del minor peso politico di Londo dopo che quest'ultimo ha comunicato a Refa di non voler più avere a che fare con Morden e le Ombre?

Note

• Jack lo squartatore (Jack the Ripper) è il nomignolo dato ad un serial killer della Londra del tardo diciannovesimo secolo. A partire dall'agosto 1888 e fino al novembre dello stesso anno, Jack uccide cinque donne (qualcuno sostiene sei, se non di più), tutte prostitute, nell'East Side della capitale inglese, senza lasciare tracce sufficienti per permettere alla polizia di scoprirne l'identità. La tecnica utilizzata per tutti gli omicidi è sempre la stessa: le donne vengono strangolate e quindi sventrate. Dopo il quinto omicidio, Jack sembra scomparire nel nulla e la polizia, che pure fermò e interrogò decine di persone, non è mai riuscita ad arrestare il vero colpevole.
• Sebastian si contrappone in qualche modo a Morden, entrambi emissari di specie misteriose, antiche, dotate di capacità tecnologiche molto avanzate e che si sono combattute in passato (e che molto probabilmente si scontreranno anche nel prossimo futuro). Mentre Morden domanda "What do you want?", Sebastian chiede "Who are you?". Le risposte a queste domande sembrano essere di una certa rilevanza per Ombre e Vorlon.
• La descrizione di Londo del modo di vivere centauri fatta in Born to the Purple ("We Centauri live our lives for appearances, possessions, status, title. These are the things by which we define ourselves") sarebbe stata un interessante contrappunto alle domande di Sebastian.
• Ad un certo punto dell'episodio, Sebastian, in un crescendo di tensione, pone a Sheridan numerose domande: "What about the people you work with, the people you call friends? Are you willing to sacrifice them? What about your family? What about your God? What about truth? What about blood? What about right? What about wrong? What about your future? What about faith? What about sin? What about hell? What about death? What about life?". Ricordate questa scena, in un episodio futuro scopriremo molte delle risposte a queste domande.
• Per l'incontro con Sebastian, a Delenn viene riservata una stanza al livello Grigio 19. Interessante, visto che la Minbari era un membro del Consiglio dei Grigi, "the nine and the one". Inoltre, le luci nella stanza ricordano lontanamente quelle presenti sulla nave del Consiglio dei Grigi.
• Il metodo usato da Sebastian su Delenn esiste realmente (J. Michael Straczynski è laureato in psicologia e sociologia): si chiama "Synanon game" ed è stato inventato dal gruppo Synanon, specializzato nel recupero dei tossicodipendenti. Consiste nel chiedere ad una persona "Chi sei?" e questi deve fornire ogni volta una risposta differente.
• La battuta di Sebastian "Have you nothing of your own, nothing to stand on that is not provided, defined, delineated, stamped, sanctioned, numbered and approved by others?" ricorda un passaggio del telefilm The Prisoner (Il prigioniero): "I will not be pushed, filed, stamped, indexed, briefed, debriefed or numbered. My life is my own".
• I Vorlon dovrebbero essere i "buoni", eppure sfruttano Jack lo squartatore. Decisamente strano.
• I due sub-plot dell'episodio sono speculari: Garibaldi ha una visione ottimista, mentre Sebastian è decisamente pessimista.
• Uno dei Narn che confrontano G'Kar è interpretato da Dennis Michael, un giornalista della CNN che durante le riprese stava preparando uno speciale sulla Optic Nerve, la società che si è occupata del makeup per le cinque stagioni di Babylon 5.
• Nella versione di questa puntata andata in onda nel Regno Unito (tra l'altro precedentemente alla "prima" statunitense, l'8 agosto 1995), la scena in cui G'Kar si ferisce il palmo della mano col pugnale è stata tagliata.
• Questo episodio ha ottenuto una nomination al premio Emmy per la cinematografia, curata da John C. Flinn III.

Zocalo

• Mira Furlan ha dichiarato di essersi divertita ad interpretare questo episodio e ad interpretare le sequenze drammatiche mettendoci la giusta intensità, come le era stato richiesto.
• Mira Furlan e Wayne Alexander hanno definito questo episodio una "danza della morte". Un termine che descrive decisamente bene la puntata.
• Stephen Furst ha affermato che la scena in cui G'Kar si taglia il palmo della mano esclamando "Dead... dead, dead, dead..." è davvero incredibile (come dargli torto?) e ha confermato di apprezzare moltissimo il talento di Andreas Katsulas.
• J. Michael Straczynski ha affermato che, riguardo alle due domande che caratterizzano la serie fino a questo punto, bisogna prima sapere chi si è per comprendere cosa si voglia. Londo, ovviamente, ha saltato la prima parte.
• Wayne Alexander è stato molto apprezzato dalla produzione, tanto che lo rivedremo in numerosi episodi futuri, anche se in ruoli completamente differenti da quello di Sebastian.

                  occasional fight, but nowhere near

                  the Centauri to allow them safe
                  passage, but they're reserving the
                  right to search any ship entering
                  Narn space.
  
        FRANKLIN: Did you have a chance to talk to
   (to GARIBALDI) Londo before he took off for
                  Centauri Prime?
  
       GARIBALDI: Just briefly. Naturally he denied
                  having anything to do with the
                  attack on the Narn homeworld.
                  Ten minutes later he denied having
                  said that. He's denied everything
                  and then denied denying it. There's
                  only one thing he said he can't deny.
  
  
        Sheridan looks to Ivanova. Sighs.
  
  
        SHERIDAN: Your serve.
  
         IVANOVA: All right, what didn't he deny?
  
       GARIBALDI: I don't know. He couldn't tell me.
  
        SHERIDAN: This place is turning into an
        (tiredly) asylum... and I'm about five inches
                  from becoming the head loon.
  
        FRANKLIN: I don't know... the way things are
                  going with G'kar, you just might
                  have some competition.

  Seconda scena, con Lennier e Kosh:

        Kosh moves down the hall a Lennier approaches,

            KOSH: Yes.
  
         LENNIER: Has she slept? Eaten?
  
            KOSH: No.
  
         LENNIER: I do not mean to show disrespect,
                  but I don't understand how this...
  
            KOSH: No. You do not.
  
  
        Kosh starts away when:
  
  
         LENNIER: Ambassador, please: has anyone
                  ever passed this inquisition?
  
            KOSH: No.
  
         LENNIER: Then... how do you know he's doing
                  it right? He could be misusing his

Blooper

• Verso la fine dell'episodio, Sheridan dice erroneamente a Sebastian che gli omicidi di Jack lo squartatore sono stati commessi nel West End invece che nell'East End. Si è trattato di un errore ammesso dallo stesso J. Michael Straczynski, che ha affermato di aver scritto sul copione "West" per errore, pur sapendo bene che si trattava dell'East End. L'imprecisione è stata corretta dopo la trasmissione dell'episodio nel Regno Unito e negli Stati Uniti con un doppiaggio audio da parte di Bruce Boxleitner. La versione di questa puntata contenuta nei cofanetti DVD (Regione 1 e Regione 2) è quella con la sequenza corretta, come si vede chiaramente dal labiale di Sheridan, che va fuori sincrono con l'audio.
