B5 312 - A Late Delivery from Avalon

Uno strano individuo che afferma di essere Artù arriva sulla stazione, mentre Sheridan e Ivanova cercano di convincere gli ambasciatori dei Mondi non Allineati ad inviare navi per la difesa di Babylon 5.

• La prima nave terrestre ad incontrarne una minbari è stata la EAS Prometheus. Durante il primo contatto, le navi Minbari, in segno di rispetto, si sono avvicinate con i portelli delle armi aperti, ma il capitano della nave terrestre ha erroneamente interpretato il gesto come ostile ed ha ordinato di aprire il fuoco. Due navi minbari furono distrutte, e nello scontro morì Dukhat, il leader del Consiglio dei Grigi. L'incidente è stato alla base della guerra tra Terrestri e Minbari che ha caratterizzato gli anni seguenti.
• Alla Battaglia della Linea erano presenti 20.000 Terrestri, ma solo 200 sono sopravvissuti.

Domande senza risposta

• Coordinare le navi dei diversi governi alieni che pattuglieranno lo spazio attorno alla stazione si rivelerà un problema?

• La spilla che indossano i Ranger è un simbolo: due figure, una Minbari e una Umana, si uniscono nel mezzo a rappresentare le due metà dell'anima, unite per combattere il nemico comune.
• Il nome della spilla in linguaggio minbari è Isil'zha, che significa "il futuro". La parola ricorda molto da vicino "Z'ha'dum", interpretabile come "morte del futuro" (con la conferma grafica dell'apostrofo che "spezza" il morfema "zha"). La parola Isil'zha, con la sua stessa traduzione, riapparirà nel Film TV In the Beginning.
• L'uomo che arriva sulla stazione affermando di essere Re Artù è in realtà David McIntyre, un ex sergente della Alleanza Terrestre, addetto al controllo delle armi a bordo della EAS Prometheus, la persona che ha eseguito materialmente l'ordine di fare fuoco contro le navi minbari durante il primo contatto. A causa del rimorso, col tempo si è convinto di essere Re Artù, il leggendario personaggio che riuscì ad estrarre la spada Excalibur dalla roccia. È sbarcato su Babylon 5 proprio per "restituire Excalibur alla Dama del Lago", ossia Delenn, che accettando la spada riesce ad alleviare lo spirito di McIntyre dal peso del rimorso di avere dato il via alla guerra tra Terrestri e Minbari. Esaurita la sua missione, Artù/McIntyre lascia la stazione per andare su Narn, dove G'Kar crede possa essere di grande aiuto alla resistenza.
• In pochi a bordo di Babylon 5 credono che il personaggio interpretato da Michael York sia veramente Artù ed in effetti ci sono alcuni reali motivi che lo confermano: se fosse Artù non si capirebbe molto di quel che dice, visto che la lingua di quei tempi era molto diversa dall'inglese odierno, ed inoltre le sanguisughe a scopo medico vennero introdotte dopo la sua epoca. Marcus però è prono a credervi, ricordando che i Vorlon hanno preservato umani del passato.
• Franklin prova a curare McIntyre ma il risultato è molto al di sotto delle sue aspettative: il suo paziente è ridotto ad uno stato catatonico. Franklin tende a pensare di riuscire a curare qualsiasi cosa, ma purtroppo non può e questo in particolare è un caso non propriamente trattabile con la sua specializzazione.
• Franklin, sebbene ne sia vittima, è un ottimo esempio di quella regola generale di Babylon 5 secondo la quale la verità si presenta come concetto altamente soggettivo, tale per cui quel che è vero per una persona non lo è per forza anche per gli altri: una mancanza di assoluti. Franklin in varie occasioni sente che quel che è vero per lui dev'essere tale anche per il suo paziente o per chi gli sta intorno. Believers è forse l'esempio più lampante di questo lato del suo carattere. In tutta la serie, i personaggi si scontrano con dei dilemmi e sono spesso pressati a rispondere, e non necessariamente le risposte sono corrette. Il punto è che potrebbe non esistere un'unica risposta corretta. La serie tende a non fornire risposte agli spettatori, solo le domande, lasciando la questione aperta.
• Anche in Legacies vediamo una nave minbari che in segno di rispetto si avvicina ad una installazione aliena (in quel caso Babylon 5) con i portelli delle armi aperti. Visto quanto raccontato in questo episodio, appare perlomeno strano che ancora nel 2258 (anno in cui è ambientato Legacies) nessuno sappia che un'azione di questo tipo da parte di una nave minbari non si debba considerare pericolosa.
• In Soul Hunter, l'omonimo personaggio dice a Sinclair: "Rarest of all, their leader Dukhat, dying. Your fault, your war". Come si vede in questo episodio, la colpa dell'inizio della guerra è da attribuirsi proprio ai Terrestri.
• Nelle scene conclusive dell'episodio, G'Kar accompagna David alla nave e parla di lui dicendo: "He has good ideas about raising up those in need, about organizing others into something better and nobler than they had been before". Le parole "something better and nobler" sono le stesse udite da G'Kar durante la sua visione in Dust to Dust.
• I componenti della Tavola Rotonda di Babylon 5 secondo Marcus: Sheridan è Artù, Ivanova è Gawain, Franklin è Percival, Kosh è Merlino, Mordred "è ovvio", ma chi sarà Morgana Le Fey?
• Avalon è l'isola in cui, secondo la leggenda, sarebbe morto Re Artù e sulla quale la spada Excalibur sarebbe stata occultata dopo la morte dell'eroe.
• Prometeo è il dio greco che donò il fuoco all'umanità e per questo si inimicò le altre divinità.

• Artù è impersonato dal famoso attore Michael York. Jason Carter ha detto di lui: "Michael York was great, so princely, so kingly. It comes from a time when stars crossed over and were perceived aristocracy, particularly if you've played a lot of aristocracy like he has done, then suddenly you're an ambassador for Britain. I think growing up with him as an image on screen, it's more powerfully subconsciously effective than you think, and I must admit I was frightened that I wasn't going to be very good after all the films I saw him do while I was growing up".
• Anche J. Michael Straczynski è stato molto felice della presenza di Michael York e gli ha fatto firmare la sua copia in laser disc di Cabaret.
• Nel corso dell'episodio, G'Kar e Artù si ubriacano assieme. A proposito di alcool, Andreas Katsulas ha detto: "I'm not a drinker. I think back in my twenties in college I got drunk once and saw that it was not for me. Does the guy playing Othello need to have killed someone to know how to play the part? No. I faked it! I kind of slurred and just acted drunk, it was like a kid would do".
• Il disordine interno del personaggio di Artù viene mostrato visualmente usando una sequenza di sceneggiature in bianco e nero con immagini di corridoi infiniti ed eventi della guerra tra Terrestri e Minbari. Il regista Michael Laurence Vejar spiega: "We wanted to get the feeling, as was written, that it was a very long corridor, limbo like, that had doorways to this other dimension. The character was forced to run up and down forever and open doors to the things that frightened him the most. It was really fun to shoot. As far as the practical shooting of it, they took the central corridor and built a diminishing scale set. The size of the doors diminished towards the background and we cloaked the whole thing in black to create the image of limbo and shot it at different frame rates than the normal 24 frames. We shot it at six frames a second and then printed every frame four times so that it gave a normal speed feel but very jerky. The camera we used is called a Ramp camera, we ramped from six frames a second to, I think, one hundred frames a second, so it got that real jerky thing and then it started to float into a very slow motion thing. I thought it was quite effective in getting the nightmare flare of running forever and not being able to get where you think you want to go".
• Questo episodio marca la prima menzione della storia di Artù all'interno della serie. La similitudine Sheridan/Artù e Delenn/Dama del Lago può andar bene, ma è forse debole se confrontata con la coppia di un'altra storia molto simile a Babylon 5, quella de Il signore degli anelli. In questo caso si può pensare a Sheridan come ad Aragorn e a Delenn come ad Arwin. Non è un caso che J. Michael Straczynski abbia dato a Bruce Boxleitner una copia del libro di Tolkien, chiedendogli di leggerlo.
