B5 316 - War Without End - Part 1

Jeffrey Sinclair torna su Babylon 5 per portare a termine, insieme a Sheridan e ai vecchi colleghi, una missione di grande importanza: impadronirsi di Babylon 4.

• Due misteriose lettere, scritte più di 900 anni prima degli avvenimenti di questo episodio, sono recapitate a Jeffrey Sinclair e a Delenn.
• Un messaggio di soccorso di Ivanova contenente un SOS per Babylon 5, che si trova sotto attacco da parte di un nemico misterioso, arriva dal Settore 14. Garibaldi decide di indagare sull'accaduto, visto anche quanto successo in Babylon Squared, ed arrivato sul posto, scopre che la frattura temporale che si trova nel Settore 14 è larga il doppio del normale e che la sua crescita è dovuta ad un raggio di tachioni proveniente da Epsilon 3. In seguito, riesce a recuperare nuovi dettagli sul messaggio: il nemico è rappresentato da navi delle Ombre, Sheridan è morto e Garibaldi sta minando i reattori a fusione della stazione, ormai prossima a capitolare.
• Delenn racconta a Sheridan, Ivanova, Sinclair e Marcus un importante segreto gelosamente custodito dai membri del Consiglio dei Grigi: al tempo dell'ultima grande guerra contro le Ombre, la stazione spaziale centro delle operazioni dei Minbari fu distrutta dalle Ombre, che sembravano ormai prossime alla vittoria, ma poco dopo una nuova stazione comparve dal nulla: Babylon 4. Grazie a questa, i Minbari, i Vorlon e i loro alleati riuscirono a ribaltare le sorti della guerra, scacciando le Ombre da Z'ha'dum e distruggendo oltre due terzi della loro flotta.
• Gli alleati delle Ombre avevano un piano per distruggere Babylon 4 subito dopo il completamento della stazione. Ma l'intervento di Sheridan e soci a bordo della White Star tornata indietro nel tempo ha impedito al convoglio di navi delle Ombre di piazzare bombe a fusione sulla stazione.
• A seguito della rottura del proprio stabilizzatore, Sheridan si ritrova in un futuro imprecisato, nel quale Londo è imperatore dei Centauri, Sheridan è riuscito a sconfiggere le Ombre, ma ciò non ha impedito che in qualche modo Centauri Prime venisse devastato dai seguaci delle Ombre per colpa, a quanto afferma Londo, di Sheridan.

• Per quale ragione Zathras è preoccupato delle condizioni dei macchinari su Epsilon 3, definendo la situazione "non buona"?
• Perché Zathras si dice onorato di incontrare Sheridan? Quali sono le cose che Draal gli ha ordinato di non rivelare?
• Riuscirà Sheridan a tornare al tempo che gli compete? Conoscerà altri dettagli sul proprio futuro?

Note

• La creazione del raggio di tachioni che agisce sulla frattura temporale nel Settore 14 impegna Draal ed i macchinari su Epsilon 3 al massimo delle rispettive possibilità.
• Durante la permanenza su Minbar come capo dei Ranger, Sinclair si è creato una reputazione di uomo che risponde alle domande con poche e criptiche parole. Una caratteristica che lo fa assomigliare molto ad un Vorlon.
• Solo l'installazione di un apposito dispositivo segnalatore nel generatore principale di Babylon 4 può permettere a Draal e ai macchinari di Epsilon 3 di guidare correttamente la stazione attraverso il tempo.
• Tramite alcuni stabilizzatori temporali, Sheridan, Sinclair, Ivanova, Delenn, Marcus e Zathras riescono a salire a bordo di Babylon 4 senza venire intrappolati dal tempo, viaggiando nel passato e/o nel futuro.
• La White Star possiede l'abilità di imparare dalle precedenti esperienze, rendendo i suoi sistemi difensivi più potenti con l'accumularsi di precedenti scontri con altre navi.
• Rathenn, il Minbari che consegna a Sinclair la lettera proveniente dal passato, è già stato nominato da Delenn in A Voice in the Wilderness - Part 1. Ha fatto la sua prima comparsa nel fumetto In Darkness Find Me. Era un membro del Consiglio dei Grigi, finché questo non è stato sciolto da Delenn. Non c'è sicurezza al riguardo, ma è presumibile che sia della casta religiosa.
• Il desiderio di Ivanova (Babylon Squared) si è avverato: questa volta lei è su Babylon 4, mentre Garibaldi deve rimanere su Babylon 5.
• Le password che Garibaldi prova per visualizzare il messaggio di Sinclair sono: "Jeff", "Jeffrey", "peekaboo" (la password scelta da Garibaldi in Ceremonies of Light and Dark), "Susan", "Michael", "socks", "fasten", "zip" (queste ultime tre sono un riferimento ad una conversazione tra Garibaldi e Sinclair in Babylon Squared) e, per ultima, "hello, dear friend" (le prime parole usate da Sinclair nel messaggio per Garibaldi in The Coming of Shadows).
• Sinclair e Sheridan si erano già incontrati durante le rivolte per scarsità di cibo ("food riots") su Marte menzionate da Laurel Takashima in The Gathering.
• Sinclair compara sé stesso e Sheridan ad altre famose coppie: Butch e Sundance (Butch Cassidy e Sundance Kid sono due famosi fuorilegge dei tempi del Far West), Lewis and Clark (Meriwether Lewis e William Clark furono due esploratori, tra i primi a viaggiare nei territori tra il Mississippi e le Montagne Rocciose nei primi anni del diciannovesimo secolo) e Lucy ed Ethel (Lucy Ricardo ed Ethel Mertz sono due personaggi della sit-com americana I Love Lucy interpretati da Lucille Ball e Vivian Vance).
• In The Coming of Shadows l'imperatore centauri chiede a Kosh come finirà il tutto, e la risposta del Vorlon sembra coerente con quanto mostra il Londo del futuro a Sheridan: Centauri Prime è in fiamme.
• Sinclair ha una cicatrice sul volto. La storia che spiega come se l'è procurata è raccontata nel romanzo To Dream in the City of Sorrows, che narra dell'arrivo di Sinclair su Minbar, della sua elevazione a Ranger One (Anla-shok Na) e, successivamente, a Entil'zha.
• Alcuni alleati delle Ombre cercano di distruggere Babylon 4 per mezzo di una bomba a fusione. I caccia sono pilotati dagli alleati di queste e non dalle stesse Ombre perché all'epoca la Icarus non era ancora andata su Z'ha'dum e non le aveva ancora "risvegliate".
• L'energia della bomba a fusione danneggia lo stabilizzatore di Sheridan e lo fa saltare nel futuro, facendogli prendere il posto di sé stesso molti anni avanti nel tempo. Secondo J. Michael Straczynski, lo Sheridan del futuro entra in una sorta di stato onirico per lasciare il posto alla coscienza dello Sheridan del presente.
• Viene svelata una delle potenzialità della Grande Macchina di Epsilon 3: è capace, tra le altre cose, di aprire un percorso verso il passato o il futuro.
• Sheridan dice a Delenn che si fida di lei a tal punto da rischiare la vita. Questa affermazione giocherà un ruolo importante nei prossimi episodi.
• Ad un certo punto, Sinclair comincia ad usare una lingua minbari per evitare che gli altri capiscano le sue intenzioni. Ha però dimenticato che Marcus lo conosce bene (è stato addestrato dallo stesso Sinclair), sa come pensa ed agisce, e probabilmente parla la stessa lingua minbari. Quindi, è probabile che abbia capito che Sinclair voglia tenere qualcosa nascosto, anche se forse non sa esattamente cosa sia.
• Secondo J. Michael Straczynski, i Minbari non hanno registrazioni dell'ultima grande guerra contro le Ombre per via della loro società rigidamente strutturata: coloro ai quali erano stati affidati i dati e le registrazioni, avevano deciso di tenerli in un singolo posto, e questo venne distrutto verso la fine della guerra.
• Sempre secondo J. Michael Straczynski, i Minbari hanno quantomeno effettuato esperimenti sui viaggi nel tempo, ma purtroppo non possiedono il livello tecnologico sufficiente per compierne.
• Il nome dell'alieno che vediamo con Zathras su Epsilon 3, secondo i credit dell'episodio, è Spragg.
• Delenn dice a Sinclair: "Why do your people always ask if someone is ready right before you are going to do something massively unwise?". Si sta riferendo alla scena in Matters of Honor nella quale Sheridan, prima di iniziare la "bonehead maneuver", le chiese: "You ready?". La sua risposta fu: "No. But you may proceed anyway".
• In questa puntata si vede per la prima volta la superficie di Minbar. La scena risulta da una combinazione di matte, computer grafica e riprese delle cascate del Niagara. La città è stata disegnata da Eric Chauvin.
• Nella visione del futuro di Sheridan, Londo afferma che il capitano ha vinto la guerra, ma i Centauri ne han pagato il prezzo. Nonostante dica che la guerra è finita molti anni prima, ci sono tuttora incendi e devastazioni su Centauri Prime. La ragione di questi, così come la loro origine, viene raccontata nella trilogia di libri su Centauri Prime di Peter David.
• L'interno del tempio nel quale Rathenn e Sinclair parlano è una ridecorazione della sceneggiatura del giardino Zen (apparso spesso durante la prima stagione e la seconda). Il corridoio di per sé è lungo a malapena 5 piedi (1 metro e mezzo circa) oltre al punto in cui i personaggi parlano, il resto è tutta computer grafica.
• Per realizzare l'episodio, è stato riutilizzato una parte del materiale filmato per Babylon Squared, mentre sono state rigirate altre scene.

Zocalo

• Ardwright Chamberlain ha prestato la sua voce anche al Vorlon che compare in questa puntata. J. Michael Straczynski ha "diretto" Chamberlain, posizionandosi al di fuori della cabina di registrazione e usando le mani per indicare i crescendo della voce che desiderava.
• Claudia Christian ha così commentato la sua esperienza della scena in cui Babylon 5 è sotto attacco e lei invia una richiesta di aiuto: "It was interesting to do, I felt like I was in one of those Die Hard movies. I was actually standing on my knees, so that was kind of funny".
• Questo episodio doppio mostra l'altro lato degli eventi disegnati in Babylon Squared. J. Michael Straczynski già ai tempi aveva precisamente delineato la storia che qui viene raccontata, ma all'epoca di Babylon Squared, la partenza di Michael O'Hare non era prevista, e Straczynski non ha mai avuto realmente intenzione di rivelare come si sarebbe evoluta la storia complessiva se Sinclair fosse rimasto: "I'm fundamentally busy enough telling the story that is, without telling the story that isn't or might have been. All I can say is that had Sinclair stayed, a character like Sheridan or Sheridan himself in a different venue, would have had to come into the story at this point. That is one of the reasons why the change was done when it was done, because the more you sit and think about it, the more you being to realize, if you develop a character as your lead for three years and then you yank him out, you've got a serious problem on your hands. People may not react well to that. It's better to make that change earlier than pull the final trigger on it later".
• All'epoca dell'ultima guerra contro le Ombre, i Minbari avevano da poco sviluppato la capacità di viaggiare nello spazio.
• A quanto pare, il personaggio del Generale Hague avrebbe dovuto prendere le veci di Sheridan se Sinclair fosse rimasto. Non sarebbe (ovviamente) morto nello scontro a fuoco raccontato in Severed Dreams, e avrebbe aiutato molto più fortemente Sinclair durante la battaglia con la Terra, prendendo il suo posto più o meno in questo punto della storia. Non è dato sapere cosa sarebbe stato della relazione tra Delenn e Sinclair, tant'è vero che Sinclair aveva già una compagna (Catherine Sakai), con la quale aveva promesso di sposarsi. È possibile pensare che Delenn avrebbe trovato Hague attraente così come ora trova Sheridan.
• Nella prima versione dello script, Sheridan e l'equipaggio avrebbero dovuto recarsi su Epsilon 3, laddove sarebbe stato Draal a spiegare la vicenda di Babylon 4. Purtroppo John Schuck era già impegnato in Hello Dolly a Broadway e non ha potuto interpretare il suo ruolo. La storia è stata quindi riscritta, spostando le parti di Draal a Delenn.
• Sia Bruce Boxleitner che Michael O'Hare hanno dichiarato che è stato per loro un vero piacere lavorare fianco a fianco, e che ognuno ha un profondo rispetto per il lavoro dell'altro.
• Bruce Boxleitner così racconta la sua prima occasione d'incontro con Michael O'Hare: "I had wrapped a scene and he was just coming in. There was no one else around. I was coming out the door, and as I was heading out, I was undoing my collar, trying to get out of wardrobe and get home, and he walked in and said 'Bruce - Michael O'Hare'. I said 'Michael, how are you? Hi.' And we stood there and talked for a few minutes and talked about the upcoming episode. He was there to do some fittings and stuff like that and it was just like two actors, two friendly guys. We talked and talked and talked".
• Michael O'Hare così commenta il suo ritorno alla serie: "It was particularly good to see John Flinn whom I'm particularly fond of, who's director of photography. I like him very much and admire him, so it was good to see him and work with him. I like Bruce very much, a good fellow. I had a lot of other things on my mind, so I just came and did the job and left. It was a little eerie, a little unusual, but it was OK. People were very friendly. It went without a hitch".
• La prima parte della storia è piena di spiegazioni per aiutare gli eventuali spettatori che si fossero messi a guardare Babylon 5 dalla seconda o terza stagione a capire l'intrigo di base. A Delenn è stato dato il compito di fornire una larga parte di queste spiegazioni e Mira Furlan ha ammesso che non è stato facile per lei capirle a pieno: "I had to go back into old scripts and read it and figure it all out. That was really, really complicated. You have to be aware of many elements, you have to know the story, you have to be able to connect all the parts and to think in advance and remember what happened. So it was tough, a lot of explaining. I prefer episodes where things are happening, where things are not being explained. For me, as an actor explaining, there's not much you can do. It's the function that has to be done. You have to explain some things, so you do it, but there is no particular depth or drama in it, nothing you can contribute somehow".
• Originariamente, l'episodio avrebbe dovuto essere diretto da Adam Nimoy, ma Michael Laurence Vejar ha preso il suo posto in seguito.
• La puntata avrebbe dovuto terminare con le parole di Londo "...just in time to die", ma alcune scene sono state aggiunte perché la seconda parte aveva troppo materiale.
• J. Michael Straczynski descrive così le reazioni ricevute quando ha fatto girare lo script per la prima volta tra gli attori: "Well, reactions have been coming in on the two parter, and so far everyone's wog-boggled. Peter Jurasik called to say he didn't know what I'm smoking these days, but to please send ten pounds of it to his house at once. Mumy went nuts over it, everyone's very excited... including and especially Michael O'Hare, who got his copy of the script today, read it straight through, and is extremely excited by the story, and what happens with his character, and is very much looking forward to the shoot".
