B5 319 - Grey 17 Is Missing

Garibaldi scopre un intero livello nascosto nel Settore Grigio. Delenn accetta l'incarico di nuovo capo dei Ranger, ma Neroon non è d'accordo sulla designazione dell'ambasciatrice per il ruolo e pianifica di eliminarla.

• Le forze dell'Armata della Luce reclutano telepati da usare nel prossimo conflitto contro le Ombre. Essendo un processo lungo e difficile e viste anche le possibili interferenze del Corpo Psi, Ivanova pensa di sfruttare l'organizzazione segreta che aiutava i telepati a sfuggire al Corpo di cui Franklin era il coordinatore su Babylon 5 (A Race Through Dark Places). Ottiene quindi da Franklin il file con i dettagli sull'organizzazione, in cambio della promessa di non disturbarlo più finché non avrà terminato il walkabout.
• Delenn viene scelta come nuovo Ranger Uno (il capo di tutti i Ranger), in sostituzione di Sinclair. Neroon arriva su Babylon 5 per impedire all'ambasciatrice di prendere il controllo dei Ranger, credendolo il primo passo di Delenn verso la conquista del potere su Minbar a scapito della casta guerriera. Viene però fermato da Marcus che, pur perdendo un combattimento con Neroon, riesce a far capire al Minbari con la sua dedizione estrema a Delenn che l'ambasciatrice è l'unica che merita realmente l'incarico.
• Valen ha fondato i Ranger circa 1.000 anni prima di questo episodio, affidandone il controllo alla casta guerriera. Dopo la fine dell'ultima guerra contro le Ombre, il loro numero è calato sensibilmente, e negli ultimi anni, prima dell'arrivo di Sinclair, erano quasi del tutto inattivi.

• Neroon si rivelerà ancora pericoloso in futuro?

• Ora che è stata scoperta l'esistenza di Grigio 17, che ne sarà di quel piano e delle persone che vi si nascondevano?

• Nel corso di una indagine alla ricerca di un addetto alla manutenzione misteriosamente scomparso, Garibaldi scopre un intero piano del Settore Grigio, il diciassettesimo, completamente occultato. Grigio 17 è popolato da un gruppo di persone, capeggiato da Jeremiah, che credono che l'universo sia senziente e dedito alla ricerca della perfezione.
• Il Settore Grigio di Babylon 5 è dedicato pressoché esclusivamente ad attività industriali. Gran parte di questa sezione non è stata completata.
• L'Armata della Luce sta arruolando telepati, ma è difficile riuscire a tenerli nelle proprie file quando viene loro spiegato il motivo dell'arruolamento.
• Un Minbari non uccide un altro appartenente alla specie dai tempi di Valen, circa 1.000 anni.
• La Sicurezza usa i PPG invece di armi a proiettili per evitare di creare falle nello scafo esterno della stazione.
• Le parole di Neroon nei confronti di Delenn denotano un incremento delle tensioni esistenti tra la casta guerriera minbari e quella religiosa, i cui rapporti si sono incrinati a partire dalla Battaglia della Linea.
• Una volta di più Lennier dimostra la capacità prettamente Minbari di eludere le promesse fatte quando la situazione lo richiede, senza per forza mentire spudoratamente. Marcus trova il ragionamento di Lennier molto divertente e tipicamente Minbari, ma diventa serissimo quando apprende che Delenn è in pericolo.
• La madre di Delenn si è unita alle Sorelle di Valeria subito dopo la nascita dell'ambasciatrice, che l'ha vista solo due volte nella vita. Il padre è invece morto dieci anni prima di questo episodio: la guerra tra Minbari e Terrestri gli ha spezzato il cuore. Una volta ancora la serie illustra un particolare rapporto tra uno dei personaggi principali e suo padre. Inoltre, Delenn era un membro del Consiglio dei Grigi durante la guerra e può quindi essere che le sue stesse azioni abbiano causato la morte del padre.
• La scena tra Sheridan e Delenn, oltre ad essere tenera e toccante, dà l'opportunità di venire a conoscenza di altri dettagli sulla ambasciatrice minbari. In episodi passati, già Sheridan ha parlato di suo padre, ma questa è la prima volta in cui Delenn parla della propria famiglia al capitano, marcando così un altro passo nella loro relazione. Viene anche ulteriormente mostrato il diverso approccio Umano e Minbari: Delenn spiega la fierezza e l'onore che prova per via della dedizione di sua madre alle Sorelle di Valeria, sebbene questo abbia comportato una drastica riduzione dei contatti tra le due donne.
• Valeria è il nome che Lennier e gli altri Minbari presenti danno a Kosh quando abbandona la tuta relazionale per salvare Sheridan in The Fall of Night.
• La concezione dell'universo presentata a Garibaldi da Jeremiah è molto simile a quella su cui si basano le credenze minbari (Passing Through Gethsemane), come osservato dallo stesso Jeremiah.
• Alla fine dell'episodio, Marcus e Neroon trovano un'intesa da guerriero a guerriero. Neroon pare cominciare a provare rispetto nei confronti dei Ranger umani e di Delenn stessa.
• Il congegno usato da Garibaldi per uccidere lo Zarg in realtà non avrebbe dovuto funzionare: il calore della fonte utilizzata da Garibaldi avrebbe scaldato il proiettile più vicino ad essa, ossia l'ultimo in fondo al tubo, che sarebbe detonato per primo, spingendo fuori tutti gli altri, il cui peso avrebbe rallentato la corsa fino a fare raggiungere velocità probabilmente insufficienti ad uccidere lo Zarg. Questo a meno che la fonte di calore non fosse così potente da far detonare tutti i proiettili contemporaneamente. E sempre che il tubo non esplodesse in mano al capo della Sicurezza.
• Lo Zarg è giunto sulla stazione sotto forma di uovo. La battuta che spiegava questo è stata tagliata dall'episodio.
• Il costume dello Zarg può sembrare familiare: è lo stesso utilizzato per la macchina da guerra di Ikarra 7 (Infection), pur con qualche modifica.
• Il nome del file di backup di Franklin contenente i dati sull'organizzazione dei telepati fuggiaschi è "Harriet". Secondo J. Michael Straczynski, si tratta di un richiamo ad Harriet Tubman, una schiava che ricoprì grande importanza nella messa in opera della organizzazione che favorì la fuga degli schiavi dagli Stati Uniti del sud al nord durante gli anni che precedettero la guerra civile americana.
• L'unico indizio per comprendere da quanto tempo il livello 17 del Settore Grigio fosse occultato è il titolo del giornale che si vede nella scena in cui Garibaldi viene narcotizzato dal manichino: "Santiago Elected". Non si conosce tuttavia quando Santiago è stato eletto presidente per la prima volta, anche se, vista la presenza del giornale sulla stazione, dovrebbe essere accaduto dopo il 2254, anno in cui scomparve Babylon 4 e in cui, ovviamente, la costruzione di Babylon 5 ancora non era iniziata, e sicuramente prima di Midnight on the Firing Line, in cui a Santiago viene riconfermato il mandato. Sempre che il giornale non si riferisca alla rielezione di Santiago.
• Questo episodio è stato trasmesso per la prima volta nel Regno Unito (il 10/09/1996) e non negli Stati Uniti, come di norma accade.

Zocalo

• Riguardo allo Zarg, risultato incapace di incutere veramente terrore a molti spettatori, J. Michael Straczynski ha commentato: "I should have learned my lesson about rubber suited monsters. I learned it with the Zarg finally".
• In questo episodio Garibaldi ha un ruolo di primo piano, ed è la prima volta da Hunter, Prey. Jerry Doyle non è stato particolarmente ben impressionato dal materiale fornitogli: "I'm not big on killing monsters. I'm big on talking to people. I'm big on relationships stuff, character relationships stuff. Killing monsters has got its place, but it's not one of my favourites".
• J. Michael Straczynski così esplica le sue opinioni circa la parte dell'episodio riguardante Jeremiah: "The Jeremiah thread was one of those things that looks great on paper, but when you get it into a camera... I dunno, it's one of those weirdnesses that happens in television. Sometimes you've got what you think is an average script and it just roars to life on-camera, and something that looks great on paper, but in real life... ehh... I'm happy with all the other stuff in the episode, but the Jeremiah thread didn't come off as it should've. I think in part it's also my fault, in that my brain was gearing up for the stuff that begins ramping up starting with the next episode, and the Grey 17 thing was something I'd wanted to do for a long time, and there wasn't going to be a chance to do it down the road, if at all, after this season, so I went for it. As for the Zarg, that's also one of those things that didn't come off visually as I'd wanted. So overall, I'd agree... of all the season 3 eps, this one is probably the least effective of them all. But one in a season, that ain't too bad... I think it's about 3/4ths of a good episode. Where it falls down, for me, is the Zarg... I just have this constant desire to go to everyone's house and personally apologize..."
• Delenn in realtà non cerca il potere per sé, anzi ne è in qualche modo spaventata, o non si rende conto di cosa significhi in definitiva essere Entil'zha: è infatti Lennier a mostrarle che i Ranger sono pronti a morire per lei. Mira Furlan ha commentato gli eventi che riguardano il suo personaggio: "She hated that and she was totally opposed to that. She became aware of her power and it frightened her. There was nothing good in that sentence, that thought 'people are dying for me'. She's a different kind of being, so that is a sentence filled with anxiety".
• Lennier, contro la volontà di Delenn, chiede aiuto a Marcus per fermare Neroon. Bill Mumy ha osservato: "That was a good show for Lennier. On the subtle level, when the attention is on Lennier, you will notice that he has absorbed a lot of responsibility and is quite comfortable directing others and getting things done, standing there and taking care of business. Then, of course, in the bigger, more obvious storyline he has basically manipulated Marcus into a near-death situation. Lennier carries around some guilt for that, regardless of the fact it ended without Marcus's death".
• Jason Carter ha detto, riguardo alla scena del combattimento con Neroon: "The thing I liked about that particularly was it was focused intent. Most of the fights that you see Marcus in are with fairly random unpleasant individuals that have to be taken care of. Personality doesn't particularly become involved. When you're dealing one-on-one with someone who is famed for being such a great fighter you know you're outclassed and it's that focus - it's very hard not to know you're going to lose, there's just determination. That's where Marcus's honour comes in, determination to fulfil a particular role".
• La scena di combattimento è stata filmata usando un mix di scene con gli attori veri e altre con dei cascatori. • John C. Flinn III ha diretto l'episodio. La scena di combattimento è stata girata da lui stesso, con una macchina da presa a mano, nel bel mezzo della lotta. Jason Carter continua: "So there I am, hitting the camera with my pike and everyone else looks shocked. They don't know that John's behind the camera going 'go, on. go on', growling at me".
• John C. Flinn III dice la sua: "That was brutal. I got my chest hit by that baton. I got hit in the stomach, I got hit in the knees, I got hit in the head, but we went for it. It was a tough fight, it was a brutal fight, but that's what they called for. When we got done that day I felt that I had been in a total real brawl. I get so excited doing it that I don't care". Evita però di menzionare che, nel corso della lotta, Jason Carter lo ha colpito per errore nelle "parti basse". Il regista ha passato alcuni momenti di agonia, ma a suo favore possiamo dire che è riuscito a tenere la macchina da presa salda in mano.

That was after I found out that the entire 17th floor grey sector had completely disappeared. Well, not disappeared exactly, this weird cult had taken over the place, see, and there was this dummy that shot tranqs out of his eyes. Very strange, but it was also supposed to be perfect. Now that was the thing about it, but there wasn't a way out, but there was, except it was spiritual. You had to die a perfect death, that's where the Zarg came in and either it was going to kill me or I was to kill it and... am I going too fast for you?
