B5 402 - Whatever Happened to Mr. Garibaldi?

G'Kar continua la sua ricerca di Garibaldi, ma è braccato dai Centauri. Delenn comunica ai Ranger che presto lanceranno un'offensiva contro le Ombre. Sheridan riceve una rivelazione ai limiti dell'incredibile.

• La Lega dei Mondi non Allineati è stata sciolta.
• Lorien, l'alieno che si trova con Sheridan, è il primo dei First One.
• Lorien comunica a Sheridan che è morto. Il capitano verifica che in effetti il suo cuore non sta battendo. Secondo Lorien, Sheridan è intrappolato tra la vita e la morte ("in-between"), incapace di abbandonarsi alla seconda, ma al termine dell'episodio trova una ragione per continuare a vivere: Delenn.
• Lo Starfury di Garibaldi è stato ritrovato abbandonato nello spazio da un uomo, dietro indicazioni di un esponente della Interplanetary Expeditions.
• G'Kar viene catturato dai Centauri. Londo stringe un patto con il Narn: se G'Kar sosterrà il piano dell'ambasciatore centauri per uccidere l'imperatore, Londo promette di liberare Narn.
• Delenn è inizialmente preda dei rimorsi per la presunta morte di Sheridan, ma dopo aver visto una vecchia registrazione del diario personale del capitano, ne prende spunto e decide di trasformare il dolore in qualcosa di positivo. Comunica quindi ai Ranger che entro sette giorni attaccheranno Z'ha'dum.
• Garibaldi è vivo, ma è apparentemente tenuto in custodia da alcuni individui che appartengono al Corpo Psi.

Domande senza risposta

• Chi o cos'è esattamente Lorien? L'ultimo superstite della prima specie divenuta senziente nella galassia o la prima forma di vita intelligente?
• Lorien è davvero il primo dei First One? Le sue affermazioni sono vere?
• In quali circostanze e per quale motivo Lorien e Kosh si sono incontrati in passato?
• Cos'è successo a Garibaldi?
• Come ha fatto il Corpo Psi ad avere Garibaldi dalle Ombre? Se queste ultime lo hanno lasciato al Corpo Psi, quali sono le loro ragioni? O forse si tratta di membri del Corpo Psi controllati dalle Ombre (Z'ha'dum)?
• Per quale ragione il Corpo Psi ha in custodia Garibaldi? Perché vogliono assicurarsi che non ricordi niente di quanto gli è accaduto? Il Corpo ha forse fatto qualcosa a Garibaldi e in seguito ha cancellato la memoria del capo della Sicurezza?
• Come potrà G'Kar aiutare Londo ad uccidere Cartagia?
• Le Ombre sembrano tenere in grande considerazione Lorien, ma quest'ultimo pare essere deluso sia dalle Ombre, che dai Vorlon. Per quale motivo?

Note

• Se Lorien dice il vero sullo stato di morte di Sheridan, comincia a capirsi il perché sia Lennier che Lyta non sono stati in grado di rilevare la sua presenza in The Hour of the Wolf.
• L'espressione di Londo di fronte al "dono" fattogli da Cartagia è motivatamente terrorizzata. Londo e G'Kar erano arrivati ad un livello di mutua accettazione, forse di rispetto. Conoscendo il carattere dell'imperatore centauri, Londo sa che se non agisce, G'Kar morirà.
• Quando Londo acconsente a liberare Narn in cambio della collaborazione di G'Kar, si apre la porta della cella e il Narn viene investito da una luce abbagliante. Un simbolismo della situazione in cui si trova G'Kar, che finalmente vede la realizzazione di un suo sogno come prossima: la luce nel buio, la speranza in attesa oltre la soglia.
• È interessante notare che Londo non si assicura sull'eventuale presenza di microspie nella cella. O ha corrotto le guardie, o si fida del fatto che Cartagia non ha alcuna preoccupazione nei confronti di G'Kar.
• Guardando questo episodio, il "man in-between" del sogno di Sheridan (All Alone in the Night) sembrerebbe essere Lorien e non Justin, anche se secondo J. Michael Straczynski si tratta proprio del secondo. Lorien infatti non è "l'uguale e l'opposto" di Sheridan, così come Ivanova e Delenn prospettavano essere il "man in between" (Shadow Dancing).
• Lorien conferma che Sheridan ha dentro di sé una parte di Kosh Naranek.
• Lorien afferma che le Ombre tornano su Z'ha'dum poiché sanno che lui si trova lì, così come Kosh Naranek lo sapeva quando ha detto a Sheridan di saltare nel crepaccio.
• Durante la loro conversazione, Lorien dice a Sheridan: "Your friends need what you can be when you are no longer afraid, when you know who you are and why you are and what you want, when you are no longer looking for reasons to live, but can simply be". "Who are you?" è la domanda normalmente fatta dai Vorlon, "What do you want?" è quella preferita dalle Ombre, mentre "Why are you?" è nuova. Ricordando anche la frase detta da Kosh Naranek a Lyta in Deathwalker ("Understanding is a three-edged sword"), può darsi che questa nuova domanda sia quella conclusiva per arrivare a comprendere le ragioni e i motivi dell'esistenza.
• L'unica altra persona che utilizza tutte e tre le domande di Lorien è Sinclair, che le pone ai Minbari quando viene catturato durante la Battaglia della Linea (And the Sky Full of Stars).
• Il concetto che Lorien presenta a Sheridan alla fine dell'episodio, ossia che sia più facile trovare una ragione per morire che cercarne una per vivere, era già stato espresso da Garibaldi a Sinclair in Infection.
• Delenn è talmente devastata dai sensi di colpa per aver taciuto informazioni a Sheridan che si sente di preferire la morte alla vita. In un certo senso, ha bisogno di trovare qualcosa per cui valga la pena vivere, un motivo che si ripete sia nell'episodio che in tutta la serie. Oltre al già citato colloquio tra Garibaldi e Sinclair in Infection, anche Marcus pare cadere nella stessa categoria: è entrato a far parte dei Ranger, e più volte rischia la morte con coraggio a volte cieco, in seguito alla perdita dei suoi cari. A contraltare di questo è forse la figura di G'Kar, che come molti altri personaggi ha perso tutto, perfino la dignità, ma ha trovato veramente qualcosa per cui vivere.
• La frase di Lorien "It's a terrible thing when your children fight. I warned the others, but they didn't listen. They never listen" ricorda quella che Vir dice a G'Kar in Comes the Inquisitor ("I tried telling them, but they wouldn't listen. They never listen... I'm sorry") e quella detta da Sinclair a Mitchell che si sente in And the Sky Full of Stars ("I tried to warn you, but you wouldn't listen... you never listened").
• Quando Lorien ricorda di aver incontrato Kosh, dice "I think I met it once", usando "it" e non "he", quasi a voler sottolineare l'irrilevanza del suo "genere".
• È anche interessante che Lorien riconosca il nome di Kosh, implicando quindi che è univoco, contraddicendo quindi le parole di Ulkesh ("We are all Kosh"). Del resto, l'idea che i Vorlon non siano poi tanto più affidabili delle Ombre si era già fatta strada, negli ultimi episodi.
• Il messaggio di Sheridan porta la data del 14 maggio 2260. È stato quindi registrato tra Ceremonies of Light and Dark e Sic Transit Vir.
• Durante la visione del filmato con il messaggio di Sheridan, Delenn avvicina la mano allo schermo, come per volere accarezzare il capitano. Il medesimo gesto era già stato fatto proprio dallo stesso Sheridan in Revelations, mentre guarda il messaggio registrato della moglie Anna.
• Il monologo di Sheridan registrato nel cristallo dati ricorda molto da vicino i suoi recenti accadimenti: costretto a scegliere di precipitare in un burrone, gli accade qualcosa di devastante, ma non lo deve combattere, bensì trovarne i lati positivi (o, nel suo caso, trovare un appiglio positivo alla vita).
• Una volta di più, Marcus lascia il suo posto e la situazione precipita. G'Kar non gli aveva dato scelta, ma Marcus si sente in colpa ugualmente.
• La frase di Lorien "Surrender yourself to death. The death of flesh, the death of fear" è simile ad una detta da Delenn in The Parliament of Dreams ("This is your death, the death of flesh, the death of pain, the death of yesterday").
• Il rituale minbari per la morte di una persona cara comprende il digiuno per quattordici giorni consecutivi.
• La descrizione di quello che Cartagia farà a G'Kar quando questo cesserà di essere una buffa distrazione per l'imperatore rispecchia da vicino la tecnica usata un tempo dai britannici nei confronti dei traditori, se si include la parte dell'impiccagione nella sequenza "hanging, drawing and quartering". Tecnica usata, tra gli altri, su Guy Fawlkes (colpevole di aver tentato di far esplodere il parlamento) e William Wallace.
• Questo è il primo episodio (pilot escluso) in cui non appare Susan Ivanova. In realtà, era stata girata una scena in cui era presente il comandante, ma in seguito è stata spostata nell'episodio successivo, The Summoning.
• Il frammento di motore maneggiato nel bar da G'Kar è in realtà un elemento scenografico proveniente dal set di Buckaroo Banzai.
• In Z'ha'dum, Anna Sheridan dice al marito che il tempo su Z'ha'dum non segue le normali regole. In effetti, in questo episodio Sheridan si trova su Z'ha'dum, "intrappolato" tra due attimi, quello della vita e quello della morte.

Zocalo

• Stando a quanto ha detto Wayne Alexander, che aveva chiesto a J. Michael Straczynski la durata effettiva, nella storia, delle scene che lo riguardano con Sheridan, la risposta di Straczynski è stata "meno di un secondo", letteramente tra il tic e il tac, quasi fosse l'intera scena una complessa fantasia operata dalla mente di Sheridan. Da un lato quindi sappiamo che il capitano è rimasto su Z'ha'dum per nove giorni, dall'altro ci viene detto che tutta la vicenda accade in tempo zero. Il tempo scorre in maniera veramente diversa su Z'ha'dum!
• Si viene a sapere qualcosa di più su Garibaldi: intrappolato, infuriato, agitato. E a dire il vero, anche in preda al dolore: nella scena in cui strappa un pezzo della sedia, involontariamente questo va a sbattere contro il suo basso ventre... per questo motivo sfoga la sua sofferenza verso le lampade. Il regista è rimasto inizialmente scosso ma poi ha accettato la scena e anzi gli ha chiesto se volesse ripeterla. Comprensibilmente, Jerry Doyle non aveva alcuna intenzione di tirarsi di nuovo una bastonata addosso proprio là, e ha declinato.
• La cella in cui Jerry Doyle è detenuto è stata costruita "su misura": il soffitto è alto appena cinque centimetri più di lui. La successione delle riprese è stata curata dal responsabile del montaggio. J. Michael Straczynski sapeva cosa voleva ma non riusciva a descriverlo con precisione. Mentre cercava faticosamente di farsi capire dal suo staff, l'editor è venuto fuori con "Oh, you mean the Homicide [Life on the Streets] look". Straczynski non aveva alcuna idea di cosa il tecnico stesse parlando, ma alla fine del montaggio (durante il quale sia lui che John Copeland hanno dato alcuni suggerimenti ulteriori) ha ammesso che era proprio quello che cercava.

Blooper

• Nella versione di questo episodio andata in onda in "prima visione" negli Stati Uniti, il Dottor Franklin nel suo monologo iniziale affermava che erano passati 14 giorni da quando Sheridan è stato probabilmente ucciso su Z'ha'dum e nove dalla scomparsa di Garibaldi. Un errore evidente, visto che i fatti sono avvenuti praticamente in contemporanea (Z'ha'dum), a cui si è posto rimedio facendo doppiare il pezzo a Richard Biggs con la frase corretta per le successive repliche dell'episodio. Curiosamente, la versione andata in onda in seguito nel Regno Unito è stata quella errata.
