B5 413 - Rumors, Bargains and Lies

Delenn tenta di fare terminare la guerra civile su Minbar. Sheridan ha un piano per convincere gli ambasciatori dei Mondi non Allineati.

• La guerra civile è scoppiata su Minbar. Delenn cerca di superare le divergenze tra la casta dei religiosi e quella dei guerrieri, tentando di accordarsi con Neroon, ma questi si allontana dalla nave che lo stava portando, con Delenn, su Minbar, per comunicare al leader della casta guerriera di avere scoperto i piani della casta dei religiosi.
• Con uno stratagemma, e grazie alla collaborazione di Londo, Franklin, Ivanova e Marcus, Sheridan riesce a convincere i rappresentanti dei Mondi non Allineati a richiedere che i Ranger pattuglino i confini dei loro territori (Conflicts of Interest). In cambio, il capitano ottiene la promessa da parte dei Mondi non Allineati di fornire supporto a Sheridan in eventuali futuri conflitti di grande importanza.

Domande senza risposta

• Qual è esattamente il piano di Delenn?
• Neroon ha davvero tradito la fiducia di Delenn, o fa tutto parte del piano dell'ambasciatrice minbari? La seconda parebbe essere la risposta esatta, visto che Neroon nel suo messaggio a Shakiri menziona un contrattacco, al quale Delenn non ha mai fatto riferimento durante l'episodio.
• Nell'episodio si parla esclusivamente della casta religiosa e di quella guerriera, mentre non si menziona per niente la casta dei lavoratori. Che posizione ha preso quest'ultima nella guerra civile in atto?

Note

• Ora che le profezie di Valen si sono esaurite (Sinclair non poteva infatti conoscere avvenimenti che non ha vissuto), Delenn non ha indicazioni su come agire per risolvere la guerra civile minbari.
• Tre quarti dei membri del gabinetto di Clark si sono dimessi dal loro incarico dopo che il presidente ha istituito la legge marziale sulla Terra e sui territori da essa controllati.
• Nel corso del colloquio con l'ambasciatore dei Drazi, si vedono due Londo, contando anche l'immagine riflessa nello specchio o il quadro. Probabilmente una precisa scelta della produzione per evidenziare il fatto che in quel momento l'ambasciatore centauri sta facendo il doppio gioco, su richiesta di Sheridan.
• Lennier non rivela le vere ragioni per le quali ha rischiato la vita per preservare l'immagine del mondo che ha Delenn, in cui ogni individuo è migliore di quello che è in realtà.
• Neroon descrive la situazione su Minbar affermando: "We are a world gone mad". Esattamente lo stesso concetto sostenuto da uno dei membri del Consiglio dei Grigi durante la guerra tra Terrestri e Minbari (Atonement). Entrambi affermano inoltre che bisogna lasciare che il tutto arrivi alla fine, dato che si tratta di una situazione che non può essere risolta di colpo (anche se in realtà la guerra è stata poi fermata proprio di colpo).
• Anche Delenn, in Ceremonies of Light and Dark, usa la parola "mad" per descrivere lo stato d'animo in cui piombarono i Minbari dopo il primo contatto con i Terrestri e la morte di Dukhat.
• Le due trame nell'episodio si complementano alla perfezione. Sia Sheridan che Delenn trattano, ognuno alla sua maniera, con persone intrattabili, incapaci di vedere la verità e di fare ciò che c'è bisogno di fare.
• In Atonement, Delenn afferma che i misteri sono doni dell'universo e come tali vanno accettati. Neroon, a quanto pare, è d'accordo con lei.
• Neroon si nasconde dietro ai suoi guerrieri, mentre Delenn appare alla testa dei religiosi dietro di lei. Interessante contrappunto.
• Anche i membri della casta religiosa nutrono dei dubbi. Solo Delenn, e per estensione Lennier (che di lei si fida ciecamente), non hanno alcuna esitazione.
• Delenn afferma di avere visto per la seconda volta Lennier prossimo alla morte. La prima è stata in Convictions, quando Lennier salva Londo dall'esplosione di un ordigno, rimanendo ferito in modo serio.
• Apparentemente, dopo i dissidi e gli scontri passati, Neroon ha imparato a rispettare Delenn.
• Sheridan architetta e mette in opera uno stratagemma molto astuto. Piuttosto di forzare la mano, ottenendo così, presumibilmente, l'effetto opposto, usa la paranoia degli ambasciatori per farli cadere nella "trappola" e costringerli a seguire esattamente il suo piano, senza saperlo. Tanto più azzeccato, se più si considera che il piano di Sheridan è sicuramente la migliore soluzione possibile anche per gli ambasciatori stessi. È interessante notare che il trucco di Sheridan funziona, ma l'onestà di Delenn gioca a suo svantaggio.
• Sheridan non usa la propaganda, ma dispensa l'assoluta verità, usando però un modo un po' strano. In un certo senso il suo metodo è affine a quello dei Minbari: non mente, ma centellina la verità.
• La Winchester Mansion (detta anche Winchester House) citata da Londo esiste davvero: si trova a San Jose (California), ed è stata costruita tra il 1884 e il 1922 da Sarah Winchester. Nei sei acri di superficie per i quali si estende, si possono contare diverse scale, porte e finestre che non conducono da nessuna parte. Si dice che siano stati approntati per confondere i fantasmi.
• Una volta di più, Sheridan riesce a trasformare una situazione perdente in una posizione di superiorità. Garibaldi aveva citato questa capacità di Sheridan in A Day in the Strife.
• Mentre Sheridan è nella camera del Consiglio, dietro di lui si proietta un alone luminoso, conferendogli una volta di più una certa "importanza mistica".
• Ad un certo punto, Ivanova comunica a Sheridan che Marcus è in attesa sul canale 4. Si tratta di un ulteriore omaggio (dopo quello simile in Shadow Dancing) alla rete che ha trasmesso Babylon 5 in prima visione nel Regno Unito, Channel 4 appunto, all'epoca strenua sostenitrice della serie.
• Nel corso dell'episodio, si possono vedere le grandi calotte polari di Minbar. Il pianeta natale dei Minbari ha una temperatura media leggermente inferiore a quella della Terra.

Zocalo

• Nella scena iniziale, durante la colazione, Sheridan si comporta in maniera palesemente enigmatica e smarrita. Bruce Boxleitner stesso riteneva fosse un po' esagerata, ma ha fatto di tutto per rendere la situazione in maniera realistica.
• Subito dopo la scena "umoristica" a colazione, si passa alla guerra civile su Minbar: un altro dei "salti d'umore" ai quali J. Michael Straczynski ci ha abituato.
• Questo episodio ha toccato profondamente Mira Furlan, che ha ricordato la guerra civile in Yugoslavia (suo Paese natale), e non ha potuto evitare di ripensare a ciò cui ha dovuto assistere. Le lacrime che rigano il suo volto, mentre recita "I think of my beautiful city in flames, Lennier. The streets where I walked...", sono reali.
• A Sheridan piacciono Rebo e Zooty, mentre, a quanto pare, Bruce Boxleitner li detesta. Vedremo la coppia comica nella quinta stagione.
• Stando a quanto ha sostenuto J. Michael Straczynski, faremmo bene a goderci il felicissimo Sheridan di questo episodio, perché passerà un bel po' di tempo prima di rivederlo di questo umore.

Blooper

• Nel corso della scena iniziale, Marcus prende e rilascia più volte lo stesso frutto dal suo vassoio. Questo ha portato a diversi problemi, col frutto che sparisce dalle mani dell'attore o compare dal nulla col susseguirsi dei cambi di inquadratura.

Delenn: Lennier, you know the truth as well as I do. Valen only knew what Sinclair knew, could not see beyond that. Once he left us, the future became fluid. I had assumed things would continue on, like some great clockwork mechanism. As long as the war was won, we would be all right. I was wrong.

The religious caste can not be allowed to win. You know as well as I that if either side achieves dominance, the delicate balance of our civilisation will be destroyed.
Neroon: You should have thought of that before you broke the Grey Council.
Delenn: What is done is done, Neroon. What matters now is the future.

Sheridan: Ambassador, there are so many things in the universe that are and so many things that aren't. If I were to take the time to deny all the things that aren't, we'd be here for centuries, wouldn't we?

Lennier: If I had told her the whole truth, it would've destroyed her belief in the strength and the wisdom of our caste. Delenn does not walk in the same world you and I walk in. She does not see the same world you and I see. In her world we are better than we are, we care more than we care. We act towards each other with compassion. I much prefer her world to that of my own, and I will not allow anything to threaten that.
Minbari: I understand. Thank you, Lennier.
Lennier: Do not thank me. I did it for her, I did not do it for you. In the future I would suggest that you try and see the world through her eyes sometime. It might lead you to make fewer fatal mistakes.
