Sheridan presenta al Consiglio le prove contro i Centauri. Londo torna su Centauri Prime in cerca del vero colpevole.

- Sheridan presenta al Consiglio della Alleanza Interstellare le prove sul coinvolgimento dei Centauri negli attacchi ai convogli della Alleanza, che decide di attuare un blocco a tutti i traffici centauri. Per tutta risposta, Londo comunica che ogni convoglio centauri sarà scortato da navi da guerra ed annuncia che il proprio governo ha deciso di abbandonare l'Alleanza.
- Zack ha scoperto il problema con l'alcool di Garibaldi, ma ha deciso di concedere un po' di tempo al suo ex capo per permettergli di risolvere i suoi problemi.
- Sheridan affida a Garibaldi un importante incarico: assicurarsi che le White Star operino da cuscinetto tra i convogli centauri e le navi dei membri dell'Alleanza per evitare scontri che possano iniziare una guerra. Garibaldi però è completamente ubriaco quando un importante rapporto arriva nei suoi alloggi, e uno scontro tra i Centauri e l'Alleanza ha inizio.
- Sotto la pressione degli ambasciatori dei mondi facenti parte dell'Alleanza, Sheridan dichiara ufficialmente guerra ai Centauri.
- G'Kar e Londo tornano su Centauri Prime per scoprire chi sia il vero responsabile degli attacchi alle navi dell'Alleanza, ma allo scoppiare della guerra, il reggente ordina di imprigionare il Narn. Londo decide di rimanere al fianco di G'Kar anche nelle prigioni di Centauri Prime.
Domande senza risposta
- Riuscirà Londo a scoprire il vero responsabile degli attacchi alle navi della Alleanza Interstellare e a porre fine al conflitto?
- Per quale ragione il reggente pare negare l'evidenza riguardo al coinvolgimento dei Centauri?
Note
- Come promesso, Sheridan e Delenn rivelano le informazioni in loro possesso, e onorano la propria promessa, anche se sentono che il prezzo da pagare sarà molto alto.
- È perlomeno strano che i capitani delle White Star non abbiano un secondo contatto cui fare riferimento in assenza di Garibaldi, soprattutto vista la situazione estremamente tesa.
- Le parole di Londo durante la visione del futuro avuta da Sheridan in War Without End - Part 2 ("There's the legacy of your war") hanno ora una spiegazione, visto che Sheridan ha effettivamente dichiarato guerra ai Centauri. Sempre che la guerra a cui Londo fa riferimento non sia un'altra.
- La scena di Londo e G'Kar che osservano le navi centauri in volo sul Palazzo Reale ricorda il sogno di Londo di The Coming of Shadows, poi realizzatosi in The Hour of the Wolf.
- Londo prova a partecipare alla sessione del Consiglio, ma Zack non lo lascia passare. Il Centauri vorrebbe una chance per rigettare le accuse (come può essere comprensibile, visto che è all'oscuro delle macchinazioni sul suo pianeta e si ritiene innocente), ma saggiamente gli altri membri del Consiglio non lo lasciano entrare. Se così facessero, la seduta dell'Alleanza diverrebbe un vero e proprio match. Al contrario, ciò che si vuole è presentare i fatti in maniera chiara prima di passare eventualmente al combattimento.
- Una volta in grado di confrontarsi con gli altri membri dell'Alleanza, Londo disprezza quelle che a suo avviso sono solo prove circostanziali e non decisive. È bene ricordarsi che Londo, prima di ogni altra cosa, è un patriota, attaccatissimo al suo pianeta natale, che ha intenzione di difendere in ogni caso.
- Coloro i quali hanno prove da presentare, le porgono in prima battuta a Londo, affinché lui sappia nel dettaglio quali sono le fonti. Sheridan e Delenn giocano anche il ruolo di avvocati del diavolo, controinterrogando i vari testimoni d'accusa, fondamentalmente per essere sicuri che ogni aspetto sia coperto, e per evitare facili accuse di parzialità o superficialità.
- G'Kar onora la privacy di Londo, rifiutandosi di presentare ciò che è venuto a sapere mentre si adoperava come guardia del corpo su Centauri Prime. Ciò nonostante, il Narn ricorda a Londo il suo stesso stupore di fronte alle stranezze che hanno incontrato durante la loro visita. Londo si pone automaticamente sulla difensiva, ma ringrazia G'Kar per la sua correttezza.
- Le prove di Lennier sono presentate benissimo, e sono del tutto schiaccianti: perfino Londo non sa cosa rispondere. La soluzione cinematografica consistente nel riflettere le immagini sul viso dei vari partecipanti dimostra una notevole fattura.
- L'embargo contro la Repubblica Centauri rimarrà in essere finché questa non riconoscerà i propri misfatti, facendo le proprie scuse e presentando le riparazioni necessarie.
- Londo non riesce a credere che Centauri Prime possa essere veramente colpevole. Vir, al contrario, è pronto ad ammettere che le prove sono definitive e schiaccianti, e per via del fatto che non si sente, come Londo, profondamente attaccato alla sua patria (anzi, la sua esperienza lo mette in guardia), è più incline a pensare che ci sia veramente qualcuno su Centauri Prime responsabile per tutto questo.
- La risposta ufficiale di Centauri Prime sostiene che lo scontro a fuoco filmato da Lennier e presentato di fronte all'Alleanza è stato messo in atto dai Narn, usando materiali e armi trafugate durante l'occupazione Centauri, proprio allo scopo di essere registrato da Lennier, la cui sincerità è a quanto pare accettata da tutti. È molto interessante notare che Londo, comunicando questa risposta al Consiglio, non nomina i Narn.
- Centauri Prime decide di ritirarsi dall'Alleanza Interstellare e di rispondere al fuoco contro chiunque attacchi le proprie navi, facendo presente che un tale comportamento sarà visto come un vero e proprio atto di guerra.
- Londo è assolutamente convinto che la responsabilità di quanto sta succedendo non è dei Centauri, e rischia di non poter tornare più sulla stazione per provare l'innocenza del suo popolo. G'Kar e Delenn sanno che Londo non darebbe mai il suo sostegno ad attacchi contro obiettivi civili, e concludono che se qualcosa sta veramente accadendo su Centauri Prime, Londo non ne sa nulla, e questo mette a serio rischio la vita del Centauri. Per questo motivo, rischiando a sua volta la vita, G'Kar decide di andare con lui per proteggerlo.
- G'Kar si accorda con Delenn per far sì che, se il Narn non dovesse fare ritorno da Centauri Prime, i nuovi capitoli del suo libro scritti di recente siano resi noti ai Narn.
- Il fallimento di Garibaldi è stato prefigurato dal sogno di Darkness Ascending.
- Zack vuole salvare Garibaldi da sé stesso, e come molti amici di alcolisti, condona le sue azioni per dargli tempo e lasciare che sia lui stesso a riprendersi. Purtroppo questo metodo non funziona: un alcolista di solito non riesce a fermarsi finché non tocca il fondo, e spesse volte a quel punto è troppo tardi.
- Zack lancia delle arance a Garibaldi, che non riesce ad afferrarle a causa del troppo alcool assunto. Considerando che già in episodi passati le arance sono state legate a Sheridan (ad esempio in The Geometry of Shadows si scopre della passione per il succo di arance del presidente della Alleanza), si può dire che Garibaldi abbia già "fallito" nei confronti di Sheridan.
- Sheridan non sa che Garibaldi è inaffidabile, e gli assegna un compito molto delicato e molto importante. Come prevedibile, Garibaldi si ubriaca e non riesce a portarlo a termine. L'effetto per il quale la testa dell'ex capo della Sicurezza ruota a 180 gradi attraverso il liquore nel bicchiere è veramente calzante. Le soluzioni cinematografiche di tutto l'episodio in generale sono tra le migliori che la serie ha offerto.
- Sembra che Sheridan e Delenn invertano il lato del letto in cui dormono a seconda di chi deve alzarsi per primo.
- Franklin dimostra di sapersela cavare bene in un combattimento corpo a corpo.
- Ci sono molti possibili temi nel discorso finale di Delenn, di fronte alla candela. All'inizio della Prima Guerra Mondiale, Earl Grey (un ambasciatore britannico), disse: "The lights are going out all over Europe. We shall not see them lit again in our lifetime". Già in A Distant Star, Delenn aveva menzionato l'origine stellare della vita. Altre parti del suo discorso ricordano da vicino la dichiarazione dei principi dell'Alleanza Interstellare, scritta da G'Kar.
- Alla fine, come all'inizio dell'episodio, Sheridan e Delenn si appoggiano l'un l'altra, come se questo fosse l'unico tipo di sostegno che riescono a trovare: Centauri Prime non ascolta né coopera, Londo è scomparso con G'Kar, Garibaldi è in preda all'alcolismo, ed infine gli altri mondi sono mossi dalla paura e dalla vendetta.
- Il blocco ai trasporti centauri istituito da Sheridan renderà la vita molto più difficile al padre del presidente dell'Alleanza, che ha bisogno di un medicinale centauri per curare una rara malattia del sangue (The Exercise of Vital Powers).
- Il regista dell'episodio, Goran Gajić, è il marito di Mira Furlan. Dal suo cognome è stato tra l'altro tratto quello di Aldous Gajic (Grail).
Zocalo
- Per ottenere l'effetto "sbilanciato" di un ubriaco che cerca di apparire sobrio, Jerry Doyle è ricorso al trucco di girare su sé stesso parecchie volte nei momenti immediatamente precedenti l'inizio delle riprese.
- La performance di Jerry Doyle è perfetta: tutti gli alcolisti tendono ad assegnare la colpa del loro comportamento a qualcun altro o a qualcos'altro, annunciando che si sentono sotto pressione e che è il mondo intero a costringerli ad assumere alcolici.
- "That's enough. I said that's enough!": notare il modo in cui questa scena è stata tagliata. Sembra che Sheridan non riesca nemmeno a respirare tra una battuta e l'altra. Ovviamente, la scena è stata girata varie volte, da diverse angolazioni, e ora della fine Bruce Boxleitner era molto prossimo all'afonia.
- J. Michael Straczynski ha reso disponibile lo script della scena iniziale dell'episodio, dal quale si può comprendere come, sovente, un copione e il risultato finale siano spesso molto simili, soprattutto quando la sceneggiatura viene scritta bene:

emphasizing the darkness of the station
in eclipse.
INT. DELENN'S QUARTERS - BEDROOM
Sheridan is in bed, alone as we will
discover in a moment. He rolls over,
stirring, and we SHOOT PAST HIM to the
doors, where we SEE a single flickering
light through the translucent glass.
He sits up.
INT. DELENN'S QUARTERS - FRONT ROOM
REVERSING past Delenn to the bedroom doors.
She is seated on the floor, a single candle
burning before her, the flame halfway down
it, praying or meditating as the doors open
and Sheridan stands in the opening. His voice
is quiet.
SHERIDAN: Delenn...? Are you all right?
She nods, distantly, not taking her eyes
off the candle.
SHERIDAN: You should sleep. It'll be morning
soon. You'll need all your strength
for what's ahead.
She nods again, but doesn't move. He gives
it a BEAT, knowing she is in a place where
he can never reach her, then goes back into
the bedroom, leaving the door open.
We PUSH IN SLOWLY on Delenn's face
TIME-CUT - HER QUARTERS - LATER - ON THE CANDLE
The fragile, guttering flame has now burned
three-fourths of the way down. As we slowly
PAN UP to Delenn's face, not having moved in
all this time, we become aware of the SOUND
of the shower running. She doesn't note it,
until it stops. Then there's a BEAT and she
looks up toward
ANGLE - THE BEDROOM
Still mainly dark, suggesting pre-dawn,
mainly just the light spilling from the
bathroom entrance as Sheridan comes out in
a robe, toweling his hair. His manner here
is sober, almost somber. He's trying to
keep this normal, but knows that this is
going to be a difficult and momentous day.
The more we can set that tone here, the
better.
SHERIDAN: It's... all yours.
She nods, distantly. WIDEN as he goes to
the bed and sits. He pulls on one slipper,
puts his foot down, and picks up the other
slipper... and just sort of stops. He
doesn't want to put it on. He doesn't want
this day to come. He doesn't want to do what
he knows he's going to have to do. The
slipper just dangles from his fingers, the
strings cut. Delenn gets up, approaches and
sits next to him, both with that faraway,
haunted look. She touches his back, and
leans against his shoulder for a moment,
both taking comfort and strength in the
momentary contact. Then she gets up and
moves into the bathroom, the robe sliding
off her shoulders as she steps OS.
A BEAT, and Sheridan finds the wherewithal
to put on the other slipper... and sits
there momentarily as we HEAR the VO SOUND
of a GAVEL POUNDING, and the VO SOUND of
the council, along with:
SHERIDAN: There comes a moment, in all of
(VO) our lives, when we have to do
something we'd rather not do.
When we know something we'd rather
not know. This is one such moment.
He stands and moves OS.

Michael Straczynski ha risposto: "Yeah, that was a visual pun written into the script, the other shoe dropping (che in inglese significa sommariamente 'il colpo di grazia')... but also reflecting that kind of low energy thing in the morning, when you put one slipper on, and you just don't want to leave... and you just let the energy drain away, and the slipper falls from your hand... which also overlaps the gavel dropping, as scripted. I took a great deal of care in blocking out every shot in that one, as opposed to some other cases, as with Mike Vejar, where I wrote, in 'The Face of the Enemy,' 'They pull down Sheridan like a pack of wolves bringing down a lion' knowing that he would then take that and turn it into art. And he did".

G'Kar: Not in words, but the thing about losing one eye is that it makes you look deeply into the eyes of another. I found in yours all the thanks I will ever require in this life, or in any other.

Ministro: Prime Minister, welcome back. I was hoping you returned home, got out of the line of fire.
Londo: Thank you, but I rather there wasn't a line of fire.
Ministro: Is that why you brought... it along, to hear our terms?
Londo: No, he is still here as my bodyguard, that's all. Where I go, he goes.

G'Kar: Thank you. It's a burden, but I've come to accept it.

And pretend our light is better than everyone else's. The flame reminds us of the piece of those stars that live inside us. A spark that tells us: you should know better. The flame also reminds us that life is precious, as each flame is unique. When it goes out, it's gone forever. And there will never be another quite like it. So many candles will go out tonight. I wonder some days if we can see anything at all.
