Attore di teatro e quindi televisivo e cinematografico, Gary Cole ha studiato alla Illinois State University.

È apparso in numerosi film e telefilm, tra i quali The Twilight Zone, Miami Vice, The Outer Limits, Frasier ,The West Wing e soprattutto nel ruolo di Jack Killian in Midnight Caller (Voci nella notte).
