J. Michael Straczynski, all'anagrafe Joseph Michael Straczynski, è arrivato alla grande notorietà grazie al suo telefilm-capolavoro, Babylon 5. Ma la sua carriera come scrittore e sceneggiatore è iniziata anni prima, con episodi di He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Murder, She Wrote (La signora in giallo), Captain Power and the Soldiers of the Future e della nuova serie di The Twilight Zone, solo per citare i principali. Dal 1987 è nata l'idea di Babylon 5, che si è poi realizzata nel 1993 con il pilot della serie, della quale Straczynski è co-produttore esecutivo, oltre che creatore e vero e proprio "papà".

Dopo la conclusione di Babylon 5, J. Michael Straczynski (JMS per gli amici e i fan) ha creato lo spinoff Crusade, che purtroppo è stato interrotto a metà della prima stagione, e in seguito Jeremiah, una serie ambientata in un futuro alternativo, oltre ad aver scritto tutti i TV Movie derivati da Babylon 5.

Ma JMS non è solo un ottimo sceneggiatore, ha infatti anche scritto per diverse raccolte di fumetti di un certo successo, come i comic book Amazing Spiderman, Rising Stars, Midnight Nation, Dream Police e Delicate Creatures. Ha inoltre scritto dei racconti brevi e alcuni romanzi fantasy/horror.

La sua unica apparizione nelle vesti di attore è stata nell'ultimo episodio di Babylon 5, Sleeping in Light, nel quale interpreta un tecnico con un importante lavoro da svolgere. Nello stesso episodio, si è cimentato per la prima (e finora unica) volta dietro la macchina da presa, nei panni del regista.
